Loctite Threadlocker Adhesives

Loctite Threadlockers are available in many different grades to cater to a broad array of industrial applications, from new products such as power tools to a wide range of in-plant repairs. These different threadlocker types are color-coded to help you distinguish one threadlocker type from another.

PRODUCT DETAILS

Threadlocker is an adhesive for assembling screws and bolts that fixes the threads in place. Threadlockers lock and seal your threaded assemblies, protecting against vibration, corrosion, and galling. They distribute the load on a fastener over the entire engagement length of the assembly, greatly reducing or completely eliminating fastener and material fatigue. They protect threaded areas by preventing rust and corrosion. These products significantly reduce production cost while enhancing the reliability of the finished product. But depending on your need, you have to choose the right threadlocker and consider strength, form, and removability. Which one will you need? LOCTITE® makes your choice easy.

LOCTITE® threadlockers provide the ideal, dependable, and long-term way of ensuring threaded fasteners remain fixed and secure. Applied between two mating threads, liquid threadlocker adhesives secure nuts, bolts, and threaded fasteners in place. They cure to form a strong bond that prevents loosening, ensuring assemblies retain clamp load over time.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RED AND BLUE LOCTITE THREADLOCKER?

Loctite threadlockers are primarily designed to prevent fasteners from leaking or loosening from vibration. The difference between red and blue threadlocker is a matter of strength and removability. Loctite threadlocker blue is designed to easily be replaceable with common tools, whereas red is a more permanent fix. If you have trouble keeping it straight, here’s a helpful rhyme to jog your memory: “Blue, easy to make new. Red, full strength ahead!”

VC threadlockers are soft locking materials which are applied to a fastener and then air dried. Once assembled, the vibration absorbing characteristics keep the fastener isolated and prevent loosening. VC threadlocker can be easily adjusted, removed, and reused. Each VC formulation exhibits varying compatibility with plastics (see table on each product page for details).

For a hold that can be easily removed, Loctite Threadlocker Blue 242 is the hero. It’s perfect for motorized and nonmotorized parts that need occasional servicing, like car parts (oil pans, water pumps, etc), or even motorized yard equipment, bicycles, furniture and much more.

For parts that need a more permanent hold, like structural bolts in a home, auto suspensions and frames, or any other heavy machinery, Loctite Threadlocker Red 271 is the answer. This industrial grade threadlocker packs a stronger punch than the blue and can only be removed by heating the parts to 500F.  

THREADLOCKER APPLICATION TECHNIQUES

The application technique is the same for both red and blue Loctite threadlockers. Here’s what you do.

1. Make sure nuts and bolts are clean and free from oil or dirt. Both surfaces must be clean to develop the full bonding strength. 
2. Apply a few drops of Loctite threadlocker on the bolt, where the nut engagement area will be. No need to apply the threadlocker all the way around the bolt. As you twist on the nut, the product will spread around the bolt forming the seal.
3. Twist on the nut to the desired point and allow cure time to be achieved (Full cure in 24 hours).

THREADLOCKER REMOVAL

Removing threadlocker varies depending on the type you’re working with. For Loctite threadlocker blue, simply remove the bolt and nut with normal tools. 

Loctite Threadlocker Red 271, is formulated to be a high strength thread locker, meaning it will require the localized heat of a blowtorch to weaken the bond. Here’s how it’s done.

You’ll need:

• A blowtorch
• Heat-resistant safety gloves
• Safety glasses
• A wrench

1. Wearing safety glasses and heat-resistant gloves, heat the fastener with the blow torch for 2-3 minutes, moving the torch around to heat all sides.
2. Turn off the blowtorch and remove the nut with a hand wrench.

Anaerobic Threadlockers cure to form a hard lock when applied to a fastener and installed into a mating metal part. In the absence of air and the presence of metal, a chemical reaction takes places which causes the material to harden, unitizing the assembly. Anaerobic products are not recommended for use on plastic parts, especially thermoplastics, where stress cracking can occur, or in pure oxygen / oxygen rich environments which prevent the product from properly curing.

Loctite threadlockers are manufactured to provide specific viscosities, strengths, and cure speeds to meet any application requirement. These anaerobic resins prevent vibration loosening, while locking and sealing threaded assemblies and metal parts. They have excellent resistance to extremely harsh environments. Loctite ’s threadlocker products are used in a wide range of assembly applications – from delicate electronic devices to heavy industrial equipment.
