Memory integrated circuits (ICs) are a category of integrated circuits comprised of millions of semiconductors capable of storing data or executing code. These memory chips can retain data either temporarily via random access memory (RAM) or static RAM (SRAM), or permanently through read-only memory (ROM). Read-only memory contains data that is permanently stored and can be read by a processor but cannot be modified. Memory chips play a crucial role as fundamental components in computers and electronic devices.

While memory chips find application in a variety of portable devices such as smartphones, tablets, PCs, and media players, flash memory is predominantly utilized in BIOS, PCMCIA cards, and modems. A semiconductor memory chip is an electronic device designed for data storage, implemented on a semiconductor integrated circuit. Data is accessed within the semiconductor chip via a binary memory address. Semiconductor memory chips are engineered with a specific word length, representing the number of 1-bit cells sharing the same memory address. The storage capacity of a memory chip is determined by the number of bits it can hold. By combining multiple integrated circuits, memory capacity can be expanded to accommodate larger word lengths and/or address spaces than initially provided by the chip.

Flash technology is commonly found in computer BIOS, PCMCIA cards, video game cartridges, and modems. FIFO memory in bridges, routers, and switches is utilized in communications and networking to temporarily store data packets en route to their intended destination.
